Here are two top alternatives that should scratch your itch if you miss your Nokia Communicator.
1. The Samsung Galaxy Fold line. I am currently using the Fold 4 and it has been a beast of a phone. The "inside" opens just like a Communicator, but you just get a big screen, no keyboard unfortunately. However, having a phone that "opens" again throws me right back to my Nokia 9210 days!
This phone can be used for either business or pleasure, the outside screen is also much larger than any Communicator screen and can be used as a full fledged phone with apps.
Plus, it's from Samsung which is known for relatively quality phones and often updates.
2. The Planet Gemini line of devices. While the Planet Gemini PDA can be had with a modem allowing you to make calls and send text messages, making calls with it isn't ideal. However, the rather aptly named Planet Gemini communicator looks just like the PDA version but is designed to also be used as a phone. These are clamshell devices, and if you've ever used a Psion 5 series of PDA's from back in the day you know that the keyboard was pretty good! Well, the designer of that keyboard worked on these and the keyboard is equally as good. The reason I can't recommend the Planet Gemini line of devices is from what I've read and learned, the updates can be spotty.
Honorable mention: It appears Planet Gemini has just released their "Astro Slide 5G" phone. This looks to be a nice phone hardware wise, again hardware can only go so far, the software needs to do the rest.
Hopefully these options are enough to point you in the right direction, I'd definitely research all of the above devices to find the one right for you. I'll eventually update when I see or hear of new devices!
